Abstract

This study is an analysis of errors in the teaching and learning of French as a Foreign Language in Ghana. The main objective of this research is to analyse errors committed in the written productions of students learning French as a Foreign Language at the University of Ghana. The sample population was 100 students of French (comprising 56 students from level 300 and 44 students from level 400 as well as 4 lecturers). The instruments used for collecting data were direct observation, questionnaire and a written test by level 300 and 400 students. Errors committed by learners in the test were analysed using Contrastive Analysis and Error Analysis techniques. The study found out that the learners’ difficulties in written expression were essentially in morphosyntax. The findings and recommendations of our study seek to help reduce learners’ errors with regard to morphosyntax and orthography at the University and thus, improve written communication in French as a Foreign Language.
