    Les Problemes D’equivalence Dans La Traduction Du Texte Pragmatique : Latraduction En Français D’un Extrait De Health Conscious Living D’adrian Brown

    In this project work, we have examined the problem of equivalence raised by the translation of a pragmatic text. We have defined equivalence and its importance in translation and the difficulties encountered by the translator in achieve a faithful translation of a pragmatic text which combines technical terms and cultural expressions. Our work is based on the translation of an extract of the book entitled Health Conscious Living written by Adrian Brown. Two main problems have been discussed after the translation of this pragmatic text: equivalence problems related to the speech chosen by the author, and equivalence problems related to the cultural aspects in the source text. The choices made to translate this text were based on several techniques of translation defended by translation theorists to reach adequacy and transfer the essential ideas and intention of the author of the original text into the target language. Other minor challenges, such as ambiguity, encountered during the translation have been analyzedin this work.     Appropriate Use Of Translation Techniques In Different Text Types Translation Project Submitted

    Abstract The ability to choose the correct translation technique is indispensable; therefore, it is essential for translators to be cognizant of why a particular technique is used. This study points out and applies the appropriate translation techniques for the translation of some specific texts. Three documents are selected based on their text type to carry out this study: (i) Individu et société dans le roman négro-africain d’expression anglaise de 1939 à 1986, tome III by Professor Noël Dossou-Yovo (1998), (ii) a magazine ‘Afrique Intégration’ (2006), and (iii) a daily newspaper ‘Le MATINAL’ N° 2358 (2006). A text is extracted from each document and analyzed by showing their typology and how the translation techniques are applied to them with regard to French into English translation. Based on findings, it is discovered that translators especially beginners face some main problems related to cultural contexts, sentence or language structures, and lexical features, as the rules guiding them differ from English to French. Therefore, they carry out their translation without adopting the right techniques or even considering the text type. As a result, this study focuses on problems encountered and how they are solved with the appropriate translation techniques suggested by J.P. Vinay and J. Darbelnet, in application to the translation of the three text types selected. Keywords: translation, translation techniques, text types, typology

    Analyse Du Systeme Vocalique Des Apprenants De Fle De Mount Mary College Of Education. Réalisé Par

    This research work is an attempt to describe the vowel system of French students of Mount Mary College of Education. Through the analysis of recorded data from learners, it came to light that, learners of the school mentioned above pronounce some French vowels correctly and some wrongly. The study further revealed that, the wrong pronunciations of certain vowels are the result of cognitive activities on the part of the learners. Thus, learners pronounce what comes to their mind. Also, the analyzed sounds are part of the segmental inventory of learners, which has cognitive correspondences. The study also revealed that two motivations that can be argued to be of a cognitive nature, are at the basis of the learners' productions: an appropriation of distinctive properties of vowels and crosslinguistic influences. Couched in Generative theory, the study attempts to explain the difficulties students of Mount Mary College of Education faced in the pronunciation of French vowels. It was suggested that teachers focus on teaching the following vowels [ɛ̃] [oẽ] [oe] [ɛ] in class, as they constituted the majority of the difficulties observed. They must also teach learners to dissociate the pronunciation of certain pairs of vowels such as [a]/[ɑ], [e]/[ɛ], [o]/[ɔ], [u]/[y] and [e]/[ə]. Finally, it was suggested that more scientific research should be done in the analysis of the production of French vowels by Ghanaian students so as to help in the development of pedagogical materials that are relevant to the local context.     Les Femmes En Contexte De Guerre Dans La Mère Trop Tôt De Gustave Akakpo Et Sometimes In April De Raoul Peck

    This study considers the image of the African woman during wartime as portrayed by male writers, namely Gustave Akakpo in La mère trop tôt and Raoul Peck in Sometimes in April. The study highlights, first, the living conditions and multiple roles of the African woman during and after the war, and then the factors that affect her image. This also raises various questions about our patriarchal societies that often treat women as inferior. If women are considered inferior to men, how do men as writers portray African women in wartime in their works? To answer this question, the study analyses the image that women represent in these two works devoted to internal warfare. The study undertakes a thematic analysis based on feminist theory, which we believe is the best methodological approach to examine the multiple roles of African women and their influence in wartime in the African context.

    L’analyse Sémantique et Syntaxique de la Reformulation Orale et Écrite des Étudiants de Français de L’université du Ghana

    The purpose of this research is to identify some of the most common grammatical errors committed by French as Foreign Language Learners of the University of Ghana, French Department. These errors are identified by analyzing the written and spoken reformulated texts of the students. The analysis focused on doing a semantic and syntactic analysis of these reformulated texts using the error analysis and the reformulation theory. The research is particularly relevant in the field of applied linguistics in helping teachers identify the weakness of students when it comes to the application of semantic and syntactic rules in learning French as a foreign language. It is in the same regard helpful to students in identifying their loop holes in producing accurate French after their academic period. The research was carried out by reading out a text from the princess and the frog and allowing students to retell the story either verbally or orally. After the research it was found out that students commit more errors in their written productions than in their oral productions.

    Terminological Equivalence and Appropriateness in Technical Translation: A Study of Selected Texts from Plan National De Développement (PND) 2018-2022, Togo

    Translators should be able to deliver the intended meaning of message conveyed in the source language to the target language without changing the purpose of the source text at all. This study aimed at exploring issues of equivalence and appropriateness in the translation of texts. The source text, Plan National De Développement (PND), 2018-2022, Togo or National Development Plan (2018-2022) of the Republic of Togo, was used as the primary source material in this study. The study adopted mainly an analytical and contrastive methodology. Translation theories and strategies provided a framework not just to clarify but also to overcome the translation challenges that were encountered, particularly as the text is replete with technical terms culled from the field of economics. The study concluded that Translation Unit, Formal Equivalence and Dynamic Equivalence are useful strategies in rendering meaning in the target language by overcoming issues of equivalence and appropriateness. A good cultural knowledge was also found to be crucial in surmounting the issue of equivalence and appropriateness, especially in the translation of acronyms and abbreviations.

    L’impact de la Motivation sur la Performance des Étudiants de Fle au Niveau Universitaire : Le Cas des Étudiants de Fle À L’université du Ghana

    This research work focuses on the impact of motivation on the performance of students learning French as a foreign language at the University of Ghana - Legon. The objective of this research is to establish the relationship that can exist between motivations and performance of students at the university level. Questionnaires and observations were used as instruments to collect data from students and lecturers who are academic counselors of students at the University of Ghana - Legon. Analysis of data collected reveals that motivation is a very important phenomenon in teaching and learning of French as a foreign language. Findings also establish that intrinsic and extrinsic are both important in achieving results in language learning in a school establishment. We also find out that intrinsic motivation which comes from the learner is paramount in achieving results. This means that the learner should show commitment in the task by setting goals and adopting strategies of learning in order to overcome difficulties that he or she may encounter. The extrinsic motivation which comes from the teachers to facilitate learning is also needed to encourage learners in their efforts to excel in academic work. The study ends with few recommendations and suggestions for both learners and lecturers. For students we recommend that they take their studies seriously by settings achievable goals for themselves and adopt strategies of learning. We also suggest that lecturers motivate students in their daily studies by adopting appropriate pedagogical techniques to help student achieve better results. It is also suggested that the authorities the University adopt a new system that could allow students select their courses according to their abilities in language learning. Finally, it is believed that if the situation on the ground should change and students were adequately motivated it will have a very positive impact on their performance in the learning of FLE.

    Polysemy in Translation: A French-English Translation Of An Excerpt of Hommes/Femmes une Impossible Égalité Professionnelle?

    The aim of this project is to conduct a detailed study of polysemy as a stumbling block in translation, using the text: HOMMES/FEMMES Une impossible égalité professionnelle? as a case study. This source text which was sourced from the website of Centre Pour la Recherche Économique et ses Applications (CEPREMAP) website has been translated into English. All difficulties encountered during this translation have been documented and analysed. However, the immense problem of ambiguity which polysemy presents to translation was the main subject of this study and key examples and instances from the source text have been used as examples on how to overcome the problem of polysemy in translation. Polysemous words are ambiguous because they have several similar meanings, and are thus difficult to translate. It was however discovered that the best way to disambiguate a polyseme is to translate it within its own context.
