Abstract
This study aims to pinpoint the difficulties faced by the learners of Adentan West African
Senior High School 3 regarding the use of the morpheme des in the French language. The
results of the questionnaire and tests employed showed that the causes of the challenges
are not just related to the complicated rules governing the use of des to create proper
sentences with other elements of speech in written French. It has also been established that
differences between the uses of des in French in comparison to that of “some” or “any” in
English compelled learners to confuse the rules in English with those in French. The type
of difficulties was attributed to linguistic transfer where students result to apply their
previous knowledge in English to written French. Many other approaches to overcoming
the difficulties have been proposed. At this pre-tertiary level, it has been suggested that
teachers should regularly and frequently include learners in the exercises like practical
class activities to teach the use of articles in all of their forms. The differences in
application of rules in both English and French should be explained to the learners.
Finally, it has been suggested that regular courses be held at the Regional Centers for the
teaching of French for French teachers around the nation.
