Etude Comparee du Heros Dans le Rouge et le noir de Stendhal et une Vie de Boy de Ferdinand Oyono

Abstract

We set out, in this thesis, to study the representation of the hero in Le Rouge et Le Noir and Une Vie de Boy. Our objective was to establish that in portraying the hero in Le Rouge et Le Noir and Une Vie de Boy, Stendhal and Ferdinand Oyono adopt similar approaches. We did do because we considered it a novelty to compare two writers belonging two different literary periods and two different types of literature: French and Francophone African. In order to achieve this, we proceeded as follows: In chapter one, we highlighted literary works that discuss the hero as a unique character in comparison to others in a novel. In chapter two, we showed how the hero in Le Rouge et le Noir stood out in contrast with other characters in the work. The third chapter was devoted to showing how the hero was different from other characters in Une Vie de Boy. In the final chapter, we compared the similarities and differences between heroes of both works. Our research is expected to unravel the common approaches in portraying the hero. Both Stendhal and Oyono follow a clear pattern in representing the hero. The practical value of this work is that this pattern can be useful in studying the hero in other French and Francophone African novels. Since Le Rouge et le Noir is the older of the two works, it may have inspired Oyono in his own representation of the hero in Une Vie de Boy.
