Abstract

Despite the fact that many Ghanaian students start to learn French at the junior high school, only a few pursue it in the senior high school and this number reduces again at the tertiary level. There is no doubt that the acquisition of this foreign language is very difficult for the Ghanaian students. The main objective of this study is to establish the sociolinguistic factors that impede the smooth learning of French by Ghanaian students, in general and specifically among level 100 students at the University of Ghana. The target population was largely students at the Department of French, in the University of Ghana. The study relied heavily on the use of questionnaires, in addition some interviews and observation for hundred (100) persons. The choice of this topic remained justified on the basis that the sociolinguistic environment in which the learning of French takes place has not been given much attention. In fact, we can established a link between the sociolinguistic environment and the difficulties relating to French learning at the tertiary level, since the majority of these students do not speak French after the French lessons. The study revealed also that the students speak mainly English language as well as the Ghanaian languages in their daily activities at the expense of the French language. We found out that these students have already acquired the Ghanaian languages as their mother tongue right from their infancy, and since English is the official language of Ghana, they are very fluent in using it. The fact that the people they come into contact with speak English makes it worse, hence their low level in oral French. We have made some suggestions and proposed better ways by which these students can be encouraged and motivated to learn French.
