Abstract

This study considers the afrofuturistic deconstruction of black stereotypes and its effect on the image of Africa through the works in the corpus, namely, Aux États-Unis d’Afrique by Abdouraman Waberi and Black Panther by Ryan Coogler. It emphasizes Afrofuturism as a means of critiquing Afro-pessimistic perspectives of African realities by juxtaposing political realities with narrative and aesthetic conventions. In doing so, the study highlights evidences of deconstruction of colonial stereotypes in the corpus. To illustrate the diversity of afrofuturist works, it focuses on a film and a novel in order to observe the dynamism of the movement and highlight the mutations presented by these different forms. The study undertakes a thematic analysis of the corpus based on the postcolonial theory in order to examine the deconstruction of specific colonial stereotypes and their influence on the image of Africa. The messages conveyed by the two selected works influence black consciousness and how black culture is perceived by the global society as a whole. Our recommendation in this study is that it is of little use to Africa (or the world) to accept a representation that only perpetuates harmful stereotypes and myths against the continent and its people. We are therefore suggesting that if Africans were granted privileged access to the multifaceted representation as the West, it would ensure that the stereotypes and myths that currently poison the understanding that most Europeans and Americans have about the continent is no longer tenable. This is an effort to liberate Africans and the world from a colonial mindset in order to become aware of the multifaceted vision of Africa and encourage them to tap into this cosmos reality in order to rewrite the past, build the present, and envision a future free from oppressive structures thereby ensuring a conducive future for all.
