| dc.description.abstract | This study employs a cognitive linguistic approach, conceptual metaphor theory (CMT), to examine how Ghanaians metaphorically conceptualize LGBTQ+. The study aims to explore the role metaphors play in revealing thoughts about LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana. Consequently, the study analyses linguistic data from LGBTQ+ discourses in order to identify the conceptual metaphors that underlie how Ghanaians conceptualise LGBTQ+. Data were collected from X (formerly Twitter), Facebook and Ghanaweb, a Ghanaian online news site. Findings from the study reveal that Ghanaians generally conceptualise LGBTQ+ negatively, using the source domains; WAR, DISEASE, SIN, AN EVIL ENTITY, A DESTRUCTIVE ENTITY, CONTAINER, CONFINEMENT/SLAVERY, DARKNESS, FILTH, JOURNEY, ANIMAL and FORCE. Again, the analysis revealed that Ghanaians employ both comparison and categorisation processes in these conceptualisations. The findings of the study contribute to our understanding of metaphor as a tool for both cultural and universal expression and as a mechanism through which social identities are constructed. | |
