Abstract
ABSTRACT
By way of introduction, let us say that research has been conducted as far as the two novels are concerned. It is worth mentioning here that these researches have excessively contributed to the enrichment of the areas of study on these two Ivorian authors. However, it must be acknowledged that any attempt to establish that literature is a closed quantities as in the case of scientific figures can only be based on assumption. Hence, another approach may be to investigate the concept of grotesque in these two African novels. In actual fact, the manifestation of the grotesque is visible in these francophone African novels. So, the purpose of this study is to identify and analyse the grotesque respectively in the En attendant le vote des bêtes sauvages of Ahmadou kourouma and Babyface of Koffi Kwahule.
We have, in this regard, first examined critically some research works done on these two contemporary novels. Secondly, we use the theoretical frameworks of Kayser and Bakhtine, among many others, to investigate the representation of the grotesque in the two writings. These theoretical tools are used to decode the grotesque modes and devices in the title, the themes, the characters, the narrative, generic codes and the language of these novels. The expected result of this study is to show how the authors attempt to shed new light on these two novels in particular and African in general. The grotesque is used by Ahmadou Kourouma and Koffi Kwahule to renew African literature, to criticize postcolonial dictatorial powers, civil wars caused by xenophobia et racism, to talk to Africans in a language they understand, to promote African culture and freedom in a globalized world, to avoid the persecution of novelists and to give health, happiness and hope to Africans through laughter. These roles of grotesque include a reconnection with the African folktale, the introduction of some form of renaissance as well as a universal outlook of the African novel.
