Abstract
The library and information science programmes in Ghana are discussed with a view to assessing their problems as well as expectations for the future. Various problems such as poor staff development programmes, lack of teaching aids, inadequate research facilities, the poorly equipped departmental laboratory and funding are considered. All these have affected the image of the Department of Library and Archival Studies of the University of Ghana, the only library school in the country. The writer concludes that there is a very strong need to revise the curricula of the library schools in order to provide sound library education which will be reflected in the quality of service of library staff, thereby improving the image of the profession.
