Abstract
This study examines the incorporation of Akan proverbs in Ghanaian choral
compositions, illuminating how these expressions extend beyond linguistic
enrichment to reflect Ghana's robust oral tradition in musical storytelling. Focusing
on the Akan people, it investigates the cultural and linguistic depth that proverbs
bring to choral music, preserving traditional wisdom and promoting the unique
interplay between folklore and contemporary musical expression. The research
encompasses the careful selection, translation, and lyrical adaptation of Akan
proverbs, followed by the composition of choral pieces that mirror the rhythmic
and melodic nuances distinctive to Akan music. This approach expands the choral
repertoire and serves as an educational medium, fostering cultural preservation and
appreciation. Through performances and analytical evaluation, the study illustrates
how Akan proverbs can inspire and enhance modern choral compositions,
enriching the global appreciation of Ghanaian cultural heritage. The research
findings include six original compositions based on selected proverbs, which are
presented alongside an analysis of four existing choral works, examining stylistic
devices such as text, melody, harmony, and rhythm. This study demonstrates that
incorporating Akan proverbs into Ghanaian choral compositions effectively
promotes cultural preservation, musical storytelling, oral tradition, folklore,
linguistic enrichment, and heritage appreciation.
