Abstract
Begho, an ancient market town located in Ghana, was the focus of archaeological and
ethnographic research in the 1970s due to its past trade links with Jenne in the Niger Bend. While
much work has been done at Begho, not much is known about the archaeological practice that
was carried out at the site. It is against this backdrop that the current research was conducted.
This study assessed and examined archival documents of previous researchers who worked at
Begho, to identify and interrogate Begho artefacts at the Museum of Archaeology, University of
Ghana. It further examined field notes, site plans, maps, illustrations, and photographs from
Begho in the 1970s. Based on the archival data source, a search and analysis of Begho cultural
materials kept in the museum storages were undertaken. The research provides insights into the
reconstruction of an archaeological site by using archival records and museum artefacts, which
are key components in the creation of an archaeological archives/repository. This study derives
its significance from the fact that it would contribute to the creation of an archaeological
archives/repository.
