The Emerging Challenges to the Effective Implementation of the Ecowas Free Movement Protocol in Ghana.

Abstract

The ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol is designed to promote the unrestricted movement of people, goods, and services among its member states. However, its implementation faces significant challenges. This study explores the emerging challenges hindering the effective implementation of the ECOWAS Free Movement Protocol in Ghana. Key issues examined include state secessions, military coups, economic difficulties, and conflicts between national policies and the protocol's objectives. A qualitative research approach was employed, utilizing secondary data from books, journals, articles, and online sources to gather information on the protocol and its associated challenges. The research adopted an interpretive approach to address the complexity of the subject matter and the numerous questions it raised. The analysis relied on a comprehensive review of existing academic literature and was grounded in Devolution Theory and Regionalism Theory. Findings of the study submit that while the protocol holds substantial potential for regional cohesion, addressing these challenges are crucial for enhancing its effectiveness and realizing the full implementation of free movement within ECOWAS. Therefore, the study concluded with some policy recommendations to help the effective implementation of the ECOWAS free movement protocol.
