Abstract
The study assesses the state of Sports Diplomacy in Ghana and the role that Sports Diplomacy has
to play in national development and fostering international relations between Ghana and its some
of its counterparts. Sports Diplomacy has been studied over the years and has gained recognition
as a viable tool for uniting nations, advancing diplomatic objectives and promoting social cohesion.
However, the literature still benefits from investigations into applications and impact within Ghana,
especially given Ghana’s rich sports culture and history both nationally and internationally. The
study therefore explores the question of how Sports Diplomacy can be harnessed as a tool for
Ghana’s international relations and development efforts. The study, grounded in the theories of soft
power and cultural diplomacy suggests that sports can serve as a unique conduit for soft power
diplomacy, leading to political, cultural, and economic benefits. The study adopted a qualitative
research approach, drawing on key informant interviews with twelve participants purposively
sampled due to their active involvement in sports and related fields. Participants for the study
ranged from 22 to 42 years old, with diverse educational backgrounds albeit being connected by
their involvement in sporting disciplines. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews,
allowing for in-depth insights from participants. The data was also analyzed through thematic
lenses to capture key trends and patterns in participants’ responses in relation to Ghana’s use of
sports diplomacy as a tool for development. The findings indicate that over the years, sports
diplomacy has positively impacted Ghana’s international image whiles prevalent sports such as
football have fostered social cohesion nationally. Participants highlighted the avenues for cultural
exchange, opportunities for collaboration with other nations and enhancing national pride that are
made possible through sports. However, challenges such as inadequate intentionality, funding, and
policy support are areas for improvement. The study concludes that sports diplomacy has
significant potential as a developmental tool for Ghana, however, there is the need for greater
governmental and institutional support to maximize its utility. The implications of the study are
that there is a need for sports diplomacy to be better integrated into Ghana’s developmental
strategies and foreign policy. These will further Ghana’s efforts at fostering national unity while
enhancing diplomatic relations with other nations.
