| dc.description.abstract | This document highlights three key needs for improving the documentation and classification of African languages: a standardized cataloguing system that pragmatically combines genetic (e.g., Bantu) and regional (e.g., West African) classifications with alphabetical arrangement; a uniform set of romanized reference names for languages and ethnic groups, avoiding phonetic symbols and ensuring uniqueness by drawing on established literature rather than indigenous forms; and a coordinated system for listing vernacular publications, with major languages managed by local institutions and smaller languages handled through regional or national centers to maintain efficiency and consistency. The paper stresses the importance of collaborative efforts among linguists and institutions to develop a practical and unified framework for African language bibliography. | |
