Across the globe, integration has moved from the state-led to one driven by its people. The OAU, having been perceived as an elitist organization, became distant from the Africans for whom it was established. The AU, coming into existence in 2002, chartered a path to change the perceived elitist tag on its predecessor and to transition integration on the continent to one which is more people- driven. Integration should not remain static as a state-only initiative but spillover to include all Africans. This study delved into the African Union's efforts to advance a people-centric approach. Through qualitative research, this study revealed methods employed by the AU to promote its people-centric goals, utilizing legal frameworks, partnerships, digitalization, and strategic acknowledgment. Legal tools such as the African Governance Architecture and the Agenda 2063 establish a solid foundation, while collaborations with diverse stakeholders, including Civil Society Organizations has encouraged inclusive decision-making. While the AU acknowledges the importance of digital platforms for citizen engagement, it also recognizes the necessity for enhancements. Towards the people-driven agenda, the AU has made significant achievements which includes engaging the African Diaspora as a crucial part of the continent and emphasizing partnerships as integral to realizing its people-centric goals. The study concludes that although there have been great strides towards the attainment of the people-friendly agenda, the African Union still encounters obstacles in its pursuit, including issues such as ineffective governance, implementation challenges, and external dependence.
