Abstract
Maternal mortality is a major concern worldwide. In this study, preventive interventions for
maternal mortality were evaluated in four communities in Sofa, Waya, Shia and Nyive. The
interventions were carried out by state and non-state institutions. The study used a mixed
sampling technique to recruit a sample of 201 respondents, including 15 non-state and state
institution leaders, 98 lactating mothers, 48 pregnant women, and 40 traditional birth
attendants. Data was collected using questionnaires, interviews, and focus group discussions.
Qualitative data was analyzed using content analysis, comparative analysis, and direct
quotations. Statistical analysis tools such as frequencies, percentage distributions, tables, bar
graphs, and pie charts were used to present findings. The da ta was examined using the chi
square test of significance. The analysis revealed that state and state institutions implemented
various interventions such as fertility behaviour change communications, cultural group
counseling, obstetric medical and philanthropic outreach programs to address maternal
mortality. The findings show that the outcomes of the interventions were inconsistent patterns
of maternal mortality in the communities.
The results of hypothesis tests showed that there was a significant relationship between the
utilisation of antenatal services and maternal counseling. However, there were disruptive
factors such as people's inability to take maternal mortality prevention education seriously,
intolerance to opposing views, disregard for contraception advice and obstetric medical advice,
community culture-related issues, rampant disease outbreaks, and a culture of low loan
repayment that hindered maternal mortality preventive measures. To successfully combat
maternal mortality, state and non-state institutions must adopt a preventive approach that
combines behavioral and biological treatments with a structural approach.
