Abstract
Hypertension is a disease of deception. Sufferers
may be symptomless for years but morbidity and
mortality may both strike suddenly following the development of complications which usually occur at
critical points in the life of adults with devastating
aftermaths. Studies 1-4 have constantly shown that
the crippling effect/complications of hypertension
can be prevented. Unfortunately, this facility has
been out of the reach of the majority of Ghanaian
hypertensives because hitherto the drugs available to
them such as methyldopa and reserpine (serpasil, brinerdine), etc. have been associated with unpleasant
and intolerable side effects, which tended to
lower compliance rate.
