Bringing Hinduism to bear on the Ghanaian situation: Lade Wosornu’s artistry as a call for spiritual renewal

Abstract

Relatively new on the African poetry landscape, the Ghanaian poet Ladé Wosornu exploits the complex relationships of multiculturalism and forges an artistic vision that invites us to look beyond our immediate cultural parameters for solutions to aspects of societal problems. This paper examines how Hindu spirituality has shaped Wosornu’s artistic voice, his portrayal of the Ghanaian situation, and his construction of a response to the problems identified. In the face of the growing interdependency across the globe, the hitherto nostalgic appeals to precedent albeit weakening traditional values should be complemented with a discerning receptiveness to other models of spiritual self renewal.
