Abstract
Provision of quality basic education by governments in developing countries, especially Sub-Sahara Africa including Ghana, have been without immense challenges. Some of these challenges have been in the field of adequate supply of school materials such as teaching and learning materials, supply of adequate qualified teachers among others. The situation has become a barrier of access to quality basic education for many children in these countries and it is especially worse for those living in remote areas of such countries. This has necessitated the involvement of non- state actors in the provision of basic education.
The study sought to examine the contribution of non-state actors in the delivery of public basic educational services in Nkoranza North District. A mixed method approach was employed in answering the research questions. In all, 155 respondents; including 140 respondents for quantitative survey and 15 respondents for the qualitative interview. Results from the analysis shows that majority of students who received support from thenon-state actors were girls and that the support was in the form of educational items such as pens, books, school uniforms and sanitary pad. Further analysis indicated that the support received by the students contributed positively to the academic performance, especially, the sanitary pad. The recommendation is that non-state actors should be encouraged to contribute to the delivery of basic educational services in order to enhance pupils’ academic performance.
