Abstract
This study explored the prospects and challenges of CSR in promoting community development
within the Gwira Banso community in Ghana. Anchored in the Stakeholder Theory and the
Sustainable Livelihood Framework, the research utilized a qualitative research approach to
examine the extent to which CSR initiatives, specifically in the areas of education, health, and
infrastructure, have positively impacted the welfare of residents. Data for the study were obtained
through interviews and focus group discussions with key stakeholders, including traditional
leaders, community members, representatives from local government, and representatives from
companies. The study revealed that CSR has markedly improved both human and physical capital
within the community, particularly through enhanced access to education, provision of potable
water, and bolstering of health-related infrastructure. It was also found that CSR can stimulate
local economic growth by attracting population inflows, supporting small-scale trade and
enterprises, and enhancing community livelihoods through improved living conditions and
increased opportunities for household income. It can also promote sustainable development when
initiatives are consistent, inclusive, and responsive to community needs. Nonetheless, challenging
issues such as inadequate stakeholder involvement, deficient communication frameworks, and
environmental degradation were also highlighted. Furthermore, the research noted a
transformation in community perspectives, with CSR progressively regarded as an instrumental
mechanism for development rather than merely an act of corporate benevolence. Based on these
findings, it is concluded that CSR possesses significant potential to foster sustainable development
when implemented through inclusive, transparent, and environmentally responsible practices. The
study recommends an enhanced collaboration between corporations and community stakeholders
to ensure relevance, sustainability, and mutual benefits from CSR.
