Abstract

The study was conducted to examine the role of urban green spaces and how they enhance environmental resources in Ghana with specific focus on the University of Ghana campus. The study focused on three objectives which were to examine the benefits of green spaces on University of Ghana campus, to identify the challenges that are associated with the sustainability of green spaces on University of Ghana campus and lastly to find out if green spaces are used as an adaptation mechanism on University of Ghana campus. The study adopted the qualitative research approach and the case study research design. In all, 18 respondents were sampled which includes 15 residents and 3 officials. The study found that green spaces existed in the university mainly to beautify the University campus. It was also found that the green spaces in the university campus made the microclimate of the university very different from the macroclimate of Accra. However, the study discovered that green spaces in the university campus are faced with natural and artificial challenges. The study concludes that green spaces with its numerous benefits to the university campus and as a means to protecting the environmental resources should be properly maintained. The study therefore makes recommendations that residents should be educated on the importance of green spaces and also guarding of green spaces from being walked on.
