Item Students’ academic freedom in African universities and democratic enhancement(African Human Rights Law Journal, 2019) Appiagyei-Atua, K.This article makes a case for the need to recognize students’ right to academic freedom as a necessary component of the academic freedom matrix in addition to that of the university and academics. It seeks to affirm this position by exposing the various categories of rights that students are entitled to enjoy on and off campus. The conclusion reached is that the academic freedom of the three actors (university, academics, students) are indivisible, interdependent, and interconnected; and that the suppression of students’ right to academic freedom has the a consequence of denying them the right to engage democratically in the university campus which could spill over into their involvement in realpolitik in the real world.
