Item Antenatal ultrasonography for breech delivery(International Journal of Gynecology and Obstetrics, 2000-01) Seffah, J.D.; Armah, J.O.Objective: We studied the role of sonography in the management of 370 breech presentations ≥34 weeks maturity. Method: 185 cases had sonographic confirmation of breech presentation prior to the delivery at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital. A control group of 185 cases did not have prior scanning. Results: Significantly more elective cesarean sections were done in the study group, while the control group had more emergency sections (P=0.008), and had more traumatic delivery. Birth asphyxia and perinatal mortality were significantly more common in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: Sonography done before delivery improved neonatal outcome in breech presentation ≥34 weeks maturity. Copyright (C) 2000 International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics.Item Microbial decontamination of dried cassava (Manihot esculenta) chips using gamma irradiation(Radiation Physics and Chemistry, 2023) Armah, J.O.; Ocloo, F.C.K.; Appiah, V.microbial quality of dried cassava chips. Thirteen (13) month old white-flesh cassava roots were purchased from an experimental farm of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research-Crops Research Institute (CSIR-CRI) at Pokuase in the Greater Accra Region of Ghana. The cassava roots were cleaned, peeled, washed and processed into chips, and then oven-dried. The dried cassava chips were gamma irradiated to target doses of 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 kGy at a dose rate of 0.75 kGy/h. Un-irradiated chips were used as controls. Total Viable Count (TVC), Total Coliform Count (TCC), Yeast and Mould Count (YMC), Staphylococcus aureus count (SAC), Bacillus species count (BSC) and Salmonella count (SC) of the dried cassava chips were determined using standard methods. Coliform, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus spp, yeast and moulds were detected in the dried cassava chips, except Salmonella. Gamma irradiation significantly reduced the microorganisms recorded on the surfaces of the dried cassava chips in dose-dependent manner. Radiation decontamination has the potential to improve microbial quality of dried cassava chips.Item Training of non-radiologist medical doctors in ultrasound in Ghana(Ghana Medical Journal, 2001-06) Jumali, K.B.; Brakohiapa, W.O.; Obajinii, M.G.; Armah, J.O.; Seffah, J.D.; Kragt, J.Ultrasound is an important diagnostic equipment widely used in modem medical practices. Appropriate high-quality ultrasound services are best provided by properly trained and committed radiologists and sonographers, using high-quality ultrasound equipment. In terms of use of both manpower and equipment, the Department of Radiology ultrasound service offers the best value for money. An ultrasound service sited within the Department of Radiology allows patients to be given the benefit of the radiologist's ability to use alternative or additional imaging techniques to deal with the clinical problem without delay. Outreach services, staffed by sonographers or radiologist arc likely to provide the most cost-effective use of skilled manpower in providing a wider, more accessible ultrasound service for patients where appropriate. Notwithstanding the points made above, there is the need 10 extend ultrasound services outside the main teaching and regional hospitals to the district hospitals and the polyclinics. Hence the need to train non-radiologist to these centers and to provide ultrasound equipment for these centers. Unfortunately, there have been acquisition of all types of ultrasound equipment by private individuals and clinics in the country which is being operated by doctors with very little or no technical know-how and issuing ultrasound medical reports
