Studies on toxoplasmosis in Ghana. II. The prevalence of toxoplasma antibodies in a group of pregnant women and their neonates.

Abstract

Toxoplasma antibodies were demonstrated in 76% of a group of pregnant women on a routine visit to the prenatal clinic of the Mamprobi Polyclinic, Accra. 2. Evidence is presented for the passive transfer of maternal Toxoplasma antibodies across the placental barrier. 3. Correlation of total pregnancy history and antibody titre level of individuals of the group seems to indicate that toxoplasmosis may not be a significant etiologic factor in abortions or other abnormal pregnancy outcomes in Ghana.
