Shabtai Rosenne was a renowned professor of international law and a distinguished diplomat who has represented Israel at many international conferences and the Israeli Government in cases before the International Court of Justice.
Mr. Rosenne received his LL.B. from the University of London in 1938 and his doctorate from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 1959. He worked in the Political Department of the Jewish Agency in London and Jerusalem between 1946 and 1948. Mr. Rosenne served as a Legal Adviser to the Israeli Foreign Ministry from 1948 to 167. He was a member of the Israeli delegation to the 1949 Armistice Agreements, and of the International Law Commission established by the United Nations from 1962 to 1971. Mr. Rosenne was Vice Chairman of the Delegation to the First and Second United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea. He also served as Chairman of the Delegation to the Third United Nations Conference on the Law of the Sea.
During the interview on 12 June 1990, Mr. Rosenne speaks of his activities at the time of the founding of the State of Israel, his role in the 1956 Suez War, and the period following, including the First United Nations Law of the Sea Conference in 1956.

Considered as one of the pioneers of Israeli diplomacy, Gideon Rafael started his career in 1947, lobbying at the United Nations for a Jewish state. His efforts were rewarded when Israel gained its independence in 1948 and Mr. Rafael helped Moshe Sharett set up the Israeli Foreign Ministry. At the 1949-1950 Lausanne Conference, he was head of the Israeli Delegation. He served as the Ambassador to Belgium and the European Community before being appointed as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in 1967. Mr. Rafael served at that capacity until 1968, when he returned to Jerusalem as Foreign Ministry Director-General. From 1973 to 1977, he served as Ambassador to London before retirement.
Mr. Rafael's diplomatic efforts were instrumental in the founding of Israel, the implementation of Security Council Resolution 242 (1967) (S/RES/242(1967)) and during the 1956 Suez War. In this interview, conducted on 17 April 1991, Mr. Rafael shares these experiences in his diplomatic career, giving insight on Israeli sentiment on these events, as well as reflecting on the relationships between the parties involved.

William Mashler was a junior political officer in the United Nations Department of Trusteeship and Information on Non-Self-Governing Territories in 1947, eventually becoming Assistant to Director Ralph Bunche in 1949. His relationship with Mr. Bunche, coupled with the creation of the State of Israel and the question of Palestine led to his involvement in the actions of the United Nations in the Middle East at that time.
In 1971 Mr. Mashler continued his work with the United Nations, now working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) where he served as Director of the Division for Global and Interregional Projects.
Conducted on 16 May 1991, Mr. Mashler discussed his experiences relating to the role of the United Nations in the creation of the State of Israel, and shared his personal memories of his relationship with Ralphe Bunche.

Mr. Walter Eytan was a member of the Jewish Agency delegation at the United Nations General Assembly in 1947. In this role Mr. Eytan supervised the lobbying efforts of the delegation, which was intended to help gain a favourable vote in the General Assembly and ensure the legitimacy of the State of Israel. In 1948, once recognition was achieved, Mr. Eytan was declared Director General of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, serving in this post from 1948 to 1959. Mr. Eytan continued to serve in a diplomatic capacity after his time as Director General and was assigned to serve as the Israeli Ambassador to France from 1959 to 1970.
Retired at the time of the interview, conducted on 20 June 1990, Mr. Eytan discussed the creation of the State of Israel, the question of Palestine and United Nations involvement in the Arab-Israeli crisis.
